THE ALPHABET QUILT
This year’s Celtic Quilt Guild Show will feature the Alphabet Quilt. The idea for a group quilt was first spawned in the spring of 2014 when founding member Anne Morrell Robinson remembered reading about a crayon project. She thought it would be an intriguing challenge for the group. She also really likes alphabet letters and thought “Why not put the two together?”. The guild agreed and by the following fall, they were ready to start cutting and sewing.
For this challenge, participating members were each presented with two crayons and one letter which had been randomly gathered in brown paper bags. Members were asked to create a 12” x 12” block featuring the colours of their crayons and pictures that began with their letter. Work was to be original and quilted by each member. Members Anne Morrell Robinson, Helena Hart and Ruth Austin then pieced the quilt together, adding sashing and borders, and the finishing quilting. The project took one year to complete and is a fine example of the work of the guild’s members.
