About ALL IS BEAUTY NOW
A haunting debut novel about the startling truths that surface in the wake of a young woman’s sudden disappearance. 1962, Rio de Janeiro, a sweltering summer day. Three sisters at the beach. The eldest, Luiza, wades into the water, swimming farther and farther out until she merges with the horizon. Hugo, Luiza’s father, experiences increasingly disturbing bipolar extremes and can’t believe is daughter is really gone. Left to fend for themselves, Luiza’s two younger sisters run wild through Rio, both on the precipice of joining the adult world with all its secrets and lies. Meanwhile, Luiza’s mother Dora is certain that her daughter is alive and sets out on a quest to find her. Has Luiza drowned or staged her own death? And will her parents and siblings survive everything their search for her reveals? ALL IS BEAUTY NOW is “at once an intimate family portrait, a mystery, a romance, and a stylistic tour de force.” (Johanna Skibsrud, Scotiabank Giller Prize-winning author of The Sentimentalists)
“… a deft, kaleidoscopic chronicle of a family’s grief after the disappearance of a 20-year-old daughter off the shores of Rio de Janeiro, All Is Beauty Now is an unflinching look at the pervasive effect of secreted mental illness. Like the brilliant swirl of Carnival, the Maurer family’s story possesses multiple layers of both splendor and affliction. I lost myself in its white sands, birds of paradise, and madness.” —Anne Korkeakivi, author of The Shining Sea
